Heavy Vehicle (Diesel) Mechanics 

Heavy Vehicle Mechanics may specialise as Diesel Mechanics. Diesel mechanics service, repair and overhaul the mechanical parts of large diesel earthmoving and agricultural equipment such as bulldozers, graders and tractors, trucks and buses.

Entry into your apprenticeship

Year 11 or 12 is preferred
Successful completion of MTA's Pre-Selection Test

Your apprenticeship consists of:

  • On the job training: training received at a Host Employer.
  • Off the job training: this is undertaken at MTA Group Training Scheme Inc's Registered Training Organisation or other RTO
  • Contract Duration: Has normally been 4 years but recent changes allow for a competency based training approach for possible earlier completion.

  • Bus companies
  • Many Government departments
  • Heavy vehicle repairers
Heavy Vehicle Mechanics may progress to a number of jobs, including service manager or technical sales representative.

Tasks that may be completed by a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic

  • Diagnosing, overhauling, repairing, tuning, maintaining and testing diesel vehicles such as trucks, buses, bulldozers and other earth moving equipment, tractors and agricultural machinery
  • Detection of mechanical and electrical faults by the use of instruments to check ignition timing, charging and starting circuitry, batteries, fuel injection systems and speed control, engine condition, cylinder compression, wheel balance and alignment and braking efficiency
  • Repairing and maintaining hydraulic components of diesel engines that are used to powerattachments such as hoists, booms buckets and scrapers
  • Use oxy, electric, TIG and MIG welding, hand fitting or machining processes to replace or repair faulty parts
