Changes to the minimum engagement of casual employees.

As highlighted in our message last month, members are reminded of the Fair Work Commission’s (FWC) decision in relation to the minimum engagement of casual employees which takes effect from 23 February 2018.

From the first pay period commencing on or after 23 February 2018, a two hour minimum engagement will apply to casual employees under the Vehicle Manufacturing Repair Services and Retail Award 2010.

Currently, there is no minimum engagement under the Award. The has come as a result of the four year award review process conducted by the FWC.

The new minimum engagement follows a successful attempt by MTA organisations to overturn an earlier decision by the FWC approving a Union application to implement a four hour minimum engagement in the Award.

The MTA’s Workplace Relations Department has in the past advised members to utilise a two hour minimum engagement for casuals as a standard practice, so it is anticipated that the two hour minimum engagement is unlikely to have a major impact. Other approved changes to the Award are yet to be finalised and members will be advised of these changes as soon as there is further progress in the review of the Award.
